Long Division Calculator
Enter a dividend and a divisor to see long division done the way it is taught in school: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down the next digit, and repeat. Get a quotient and remainder, or keep dividing into decimals to as many places as you need, with repeating decimals marked. Decimal divisors are handled by moving the decimal point first.

Formula
How to use it
- Enter the dividend (the number being divided) and the divisor.
- Choose a quotient and remainder, or a decimal answer and how many decimal places.
- Follow the table row by row: each row is one cycle of divide, multiply, subtract and bring down.

- Answer
- 0.375
- Whole-number quotient
- 0
- Remainder

Worked example: 2,764 ÷ 7
7 does not go into 2, so start with the first two digits, 27. 7 goes into 27 three times (3 × 7 = 21), and 27 − 21 = 6. Bring down the 6 to make 66: 7 goes in 9 times (63), leaving 3. Bring down the 4 to make 34: 7 goes in 4 times (28), leaving 6. There are no digits left, so 2,764 ÷ 7 = 394 remainder 6.
Check it: 7 × 394 = 2,758, and 2,758 + 6 = 2,764.
Remainders, decimals and repeating digits
To keep going, put a decimal point in the answer and bring down zeros. If the remainder reaches 0 the decimal ends, as in 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375. If a remainder comes back that you have seen before, the digits repeat from there: 22 ÷ 7 = 3.142857142857…, written 3.(142857) here and with a bar over 142857 in textbooks.
A remainder is a fraction of the divisor: 394 R 6 when dividing by 7 is the mixed number 394 6/7.
Decimals and negative numbers
To divide by a decimal, move its decimal point right until it is a whole number, and move the dividend’s point the same number of places: 45.6 ÷ 0.3 becomes 456 ÷ 3 = 152. When the dividend has decimals, the division carries on past its decimal point.
Long division works on the sizes of the numbers, and the answer is negative when exactly one of them is. This calculator shows −17 ÷ 5 as −3 R 2, meaning −3 2/5 = −3.4. The remainder calculator writes it as −4 R 3 instead, since −17 = 5 × (−4) + 3 keeps the remainder positive. Both describe the same number.
Questions people ask
What is 2,764 divided by 7?
394 remainder 6. As a decimal it is 394.857142…, or 394 6/7 as a mixed number.
How do you do long division with decimals?
Move the divisor’s decimal point until it is a whole number, move the dividend’s point the same number of places, then divide as usual with the decimal point in the answer directly above the dividend’s. 45.6 ÷ 0.3 becomes 456 ÷ 3 = 152.
How do you turn a remainder into a decimal?
Divide the remainder by the divisor. In 1,575 ÷ 12 = 131 R 3, 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25, so the answer is 131.25.
What does R mean in division?
R stands for remainder, the amount left over once the divisor has gone in as many whole times as possible. 47 ÷ 5 = 9 R 2 because 5 × 9 = 45 and 2 is left.
