Expanded Form Calculator

Write any number in expanded form — as the sum of each digit’s place value. Type a whole number or a decimal to see it three ways: as a plain sum, as digits multiplied by place values, and with powers of ten.

Quick examples

Up to 15 digits before the decimal point and 10 after.

Expanded form4,000 + 300 + 20 + 5 + 0.6 + 0.07
Expanded factors form
(4 × 1,000) + (3 × 100) + (2 × 10) + (5 × 1) + (6 × 0.1) + (7 × 0.01)
Expanded exponential form
(4 × 10³) + (3 × 10²) + (2 × 10¹) + (5 × 10⁰) + (6 × 10⁻¹) + (7 × 10⁻²)

      Formula

Expanded form: the value of each non-zero digit, written as a sum
      4,325 = 4,000 + 300 + 20 + 5
      Decimal digits continue to the right: 0.67 = 0.6 + 0.07

      How to use it

      1. Type the number. Commas are fine.
      2. Read the expanded form.
      3. Use the factors or exponential version if that is the format your class uses.

      Worked examples

      4,325.67 in expanded form

      Expanded form
      4,000 + 300 + 20 + 5 + 0.6 + 0.07
      Expanded factors form
      (4 × 1,000) + (3 × 100) + (2 × 10) + (5 × 1) + (6 × 0.1) + (7 × 0.01)

      70,508 — zeros are skipped

      Expanded form
      70,000 + 500 + 8
      Expanded exponential form
      (7 × 10⁴) + (5 × 10²) + (8 × 10⁰)

      The three formats

      Expanded form: 4,000 + 300 + 20 + 5. Expanded factors form: (4 × 1,000) + (3 × 100) + (2 × 10) + (5 × 1). Expanded exponential form: (4 × 10³) + (3 × 10²) + (2 × 10¹) + (5 × 10⁰).

      A zero digit contributes nothing and is left out: 70,508 = 70,000 + 500 + 8.

      Place values

Moving left from the decimal point the places are ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands and millions. Moving right they are tenths, hundredths and thousandths. Each place is worth ten times the place to its right.

      Questions people ask

What is 4,325 in expanded form?

      4,000 + 300 + 20 + 5.

What is 70,508 in expanded form?

70,000 + 500 + 8. The zeros in the thousands and tens places are skipped.

How do you write a decimal in expanded form?

      Carry on past the decimal point with tenths, hundredths and so on: 4,325.67 = 4,000 + 300 + 20 + 5 + 0.6 + 0.07.

What is the difference between standard form and expanded form?

Standard form is the number written normally (4,325). Expanded form breaks it into the value of each digit (4,000 + 300 + 20 + 5).
