Remainder Calculator

Divide one number by another and get the whole-number quotient and the remainder, just as in long division. Enter the dividend and divisor; the check line shows the result written as divisor × quotient + remainder.

      Formula

      Dividend = divisor × quotient + remainder
      The remainder is at least 0 and less than the size of the divisor

      How to use it

      1. Enter the dividend — the number being divided.
      2. Enter the divisor — the number you are dividing by.
      3. Read the remainder and the quotient, and use the check line to confirm them.

      Worked examples

      47 divided by 5

      Remainder
      2
      Quotient (whole part)
      9
      Check
      47 = 5 × 9 + 2
      As a decimal
      9.4

      365 days into weeks

      Remainder
      1
      Quotient (whole part)
      52
      Check
      365 = 7 × 52 + 1

      A negative dividend: −17 divided by 5

      Remainder
      3
      Quotient (whole part)
      -4
      Check
      -17 = 5 × -4 + 3

      From remainder to fraction or decimal

      The remainder over the divisor is the fractional part of the answer. 47 ÷ 5 is 9 remainder 2, which is 9 2/5 as a mixed number or 9.4 as a decimal.

      Everyday uses

      365 ÷ 7 is 52 remainder 1: a common year is 52 weeks and one day, which is why a date falls one weekday later the following year. A remainder of 0 when dividing by 2 means a number is even. Clock arithmetic is remainders too: 100 hours after 3 o’clock is 100 mod 12 = 4 hours past, or 7 o’clock.

      Negative numbers

      With a negative dividend there is more than one convention. This calculator keeps the remainder non-negative, as in number theory: −17 ÷ 5 is −4 remainder 3, since 5 × −4 + 3 = −17. The % operator in C, Java and JavaScript rounds the quotient toward zero instead and gives −3 remainder −2; Python gives 3.

      Questions people ask

      What is the remainder of 47 divided by 5?

      2. 5 goes into 47 nine times (45), leaving 2.

      What is 100 divided by 7 with a remainder?

      14 remainder 2, because 7 × 14 = 98.

      Is remainder the same as modulo?

      For positive numbers, yes: 47 mod 5 = 2. For negative numbers the two can differ depending on the convention or programming language.
