Grams to Teaspoons Calculator

A teaspoon is a measure of volume, so how many grams it holds depends on what is in it: a level teaspoon of table salt weighs about 6 g, sugar about 4.2 g and ground cinnamon about 2.6 g. Pick the ingredient, enter grams or teaspoons, and get the answer in teaspoons, measuring-spoon fractions, tablespoons and milliliters.

      Formula

Grams per teaspoon = grams per cup ÷ 48
Teaspoons = grams ÷ grams per teaspoon
Grams = teaspoons × grams per teaspoon
      1 US teaspoon = 4.93 mL; 3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon

      How to use it

      1. Choose grams to teaspoons or teaspoons to grams.
      2. Pick the ingredient.
      3. Enter the amount.
      4. Read the teaspoons, the nearest measuring-spoon fraction and the weight of one level teaspoon.

Grams per level teaspoon used here

      Table salt 6.1 g. Granulated sugar 4.2 g. Brown sugar, packed, 4.6 g. Powdered sugar 2.5 g. Baking powder 4 g. Instant or active dry yeast 3 g. Ground cinnamon 2.6 g. Cocoa powder 1.8 g. Vanilla extract 4.2 g. Water 4.9 g. Honey 7.1 g. Butter 4.7 g.

These are averages for level spoons. A heaped teaspoon can hold half as much again, so for small, strong ingredients a scale that reads to 0.1 g is worth having.

      Kosher salt and baking soda

Kosher salt is much lighter per spoon than table salt because its crystals are larger, and brands differ: a teaspoon of Diamond Crystal weighs roughly half as much as a teaspoon of Morton kosher salt. Weigh it, or use the brand the recipe names. Baking soda is left out because published weights for a teaspoon disagree; weigh it when precision matters.

      Yeast packets

A standard US packet of yeast holds 1/4 oz (7 g) and is sold as 2 1/4 teaspoons. At 3 g per teaspoon, 7 g works out to 2 1/3 teaspoons — close enough that either measure works.

      Questions people ask

How many grams is a teaspoon of sugar?

About 4.2 g for granulated sugar (200 g per cup ÷ 48 teaspoons). Packed brown sugar is about 4.6 g.

How many teaspoons is 5 grams?

1.2 teaspoons of sugar, about 0.8 of table salt, 1 of water and 1 1/4 of baking powder.

How many grams is a teaspoon of salt?

About 6 g of table salt. Kosher salt weighs less per teaspoon, and how much less depends on the brand.

How many grams are in a teaspoon of water?

4.93 g, because a US teaspoon is 4.93 mL and a milliliter of water weighs about 1 g. A metric teaspoon is exactly 5 mL, or 5 g of water.
