Ounces to Cups Calculator

Ounces to cups depends on which ounce you mean. Fluid ounces measure volume, and every US cup holds 8 of them. Weight ounces — the kind on a bag of cheese or chocolate chips — give a different number of cups for each ingredient. Choose the kind of ounce and the ingredient and get cups, measuring-cup fractions, grams and tablespoons.

Quick examples

A cup always holds 8 fl oz, but 8 oz by weight is a cup only for water-like liquids.

Fractions work: 1/2, 2 1/4.

      Formula

Fluid ounces: cups = fl oz ÷ 8
Weight ounces: cups = oz × 28.35 ÷ grams per cup of the ingredient
Cups to weight ounces: oz = cups × grams per cup ÷ 28.35
      1 US cup = 8 fl oz = 16 tablespoons = 236.6 mL

      How to use it

      1. Choose ounces to cups or cups to ounces.
      2. Say whether the ounces are weight (net weight on a package) or fluid ounces (volume).
      3. Pick the ingredient and enter the amount.
      4. Read cups, the nearest measuring-cup fraction, grams and tablespoons.

      Fluid ounces or ounces?

If a recipe or carton says fl oz, or you are measuring a liquid in a jug, use fluid ounces: 8 fl oz is always 1 cup. Ounces printed as net weight on a package (“NET WT 8 OZ”) are weight ounces, and the cups depend on the ingredient: 8 oz of shredded cheese fills about 2 cups, 8 oz of flour about 1.9 cups and 8 oz of honey only about two-thirds of a cup.

Water is where the two nearly agree: 8 fl oz of water weighs about 8.3 oz.

Weight of one cup used here

      All-purpose flour 4.2 oz (120 g). Granulated sugar 7.1 oz (200 g). Brown sugar, packed, 7.8 oz (220 g). Butter 8 oz (227 g). Shredded cheese 4 oz (113 g). Chocolate chips 6 oz (170 g). Rolled oats 2.8 oz (80 g). Honey 12 oz (339 g).

Dry ingredients are spooned in and leveled, except brown sugar, which is packed. Scooped or packed cups weigh more, so for baking a scale is more reliable than any conversion.

      Other cups and ounces

This uses the US cup of 236.6 mL and the US fluid ounce of 29.57 mL. A metric cup, used in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, is 250 mL, and an imperial fluid ounce is 28.41 mL, so British recipes in fluid ounces need about 4% less liquid per ounce than US ones.
