Mean, Median, Mode Calculator

Enter a data set to find its mean, median, mode and range at once. The calculator also returns the count, sum, minimum and maximum and shows the values sorted, so you can see where the middle falls.

      Formula

Mean = sum of the values ÷ number of values
Median = the middle value of the sorted data (the average of the two middle values when the count is even)
Mode = the value that appears most often
      Range = maximum − minimum

      How to use it

      1. Type or paste the data, separated by commas, spaces or new lines.
      2. Read the mean, median, mode and range.
      3. Use the sorted list to check the median by eye.

      A worked example

      For 3, 7, 7, 2, 9, 4, 7, 5: the sum is 44 and there are 8 values, so the mean is 5.5. Sorted, the data is 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 7, 7, 9; the two middle values are 5 and 7, so the median is 6. The value 7 appears three times, so it is the mode. The range is 9 − 2 = 7.

      When the three disagree

The mean is pulled toward extreme values; the median is not. For house prices of 285, 299, 310, 310, 335, 420 and 1,250 (in thousands), the mean is about 458 but the median is 310 — a much better description of a typical house. That is why incomes and home prices are usually reported as medians.

More than one mode, or none

If two or more values tie for most frequent, all of them are listed as modes. If every value appears the same number of times, the calculator reports “No mode”.

      Questions people ask

      What are the mean, median and mode of 3, 7, 7, 2, 9, 4, 7, 5?

The mean is 5.5, the median is 6 and the mode is 7. The range is 7.

How do you find the median of an even number of values?

      Sort them and average the two in the middle. For 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 7, 7, 9 that is (5 + 7) ÷ 2 = 6.

Can a data set have more than one mode?

      Yes. In 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5 both 2 and 4 appear twice, so the set is bimodal.
