      Formula

Quality points for a course = grade points × credits
GPA = total quality points ÷ total credits
      Grade points: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 0.7, F = 0

      How to use it

      1. Pick the letter grade for each course.
      2. Enter the credit hours each course is worth.
      3. Leave unused rows on “—” so they are ignored.
      4. Read your GPA; the table shows where the quality points came from.

      Why credits matter

GPA is a weighted average, not a simple one. A B in a 4-credit course pulls your GPA down more than a B in a 1-credit lab. Two As and a B at 3 credits each give 3.67; make the B a 5-credit course and it drops to 3.55.

      What does not count

Pass/fail courses, withdrawals (W), incompletes and most transfer credits usually carry credit but no grade points, so leave them out. An A+ counts as 4.0 here, as at most US colleges; a few schools award 4.3, so check your registrar’s scale.

      Questions people ask

How do I calculate my GPA?

      Multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add those up, and divide by total credits. An A (4.0) in 3 credits and a B (3.0) in 3 credits is (12 + 9) ÷ 6 = 3.5.

What GPA is a B average?

      3.0 on the 4.0 scale. A B+ average is 3.3 and an A− average is 3.7.

Does an F count toward GPA?

Yes. An F adds its credits to the total but zero quality points, which is why it lowers a GPA so sharply.
