Reading the result
A result above 100% means the target is out of reach on the exam alone; look at the “with 100% on the final” figure for the best you can do. A result of zero or below means you have already secured the grade, though skipping the exam may still break a course rule.
Make sure “current grade” excludes the final
The formula assumes your current grade covers the other 70%, 80% or whatever remains after the final’s weight. If other assignments are still outstanding, work out your grade so far with the grade calculator first.
Questions people ask
What do I need on my final to get a B?
With a current grade of 78% and a final worth 20%, reaching 80% takes (80 − 78 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 88% on the final.
How much can a final change my grade?
At most its weight. With an 86% average and a final worth 30%, you will finish between 60.2% (a zero) and 90.2% (a perfect score).
What if my final replaces my lowest test score?
Then the final’s effective weight is its own weight plus that test’s. Add the two weights together and recompute your current grade without the dropped test.
