      Formula

Minutes worked = end time − start time − break
      Decimal hours = minutes worked ÷ 60

      How to use it

      1. Enter your clock-in time.
      2. Enter your clock-out time; if it is earlier than the start, the shift is treated as running past midnight.
      3. Enter unpaid break minutes.
      4. Add an hourly rate if you want the pay for the shift.

      Minutes as decimals

Payroll multiplies decimal hours by your rate, so 7 hours 30 minutes is entered as 7.5, not 7.30. Quarter hours are 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75; 10 minutes is 0.17 and 20 minutes is 0.33.

      Questions people ask

How many hours is 9 to 5?

8 hours on the clock. With a 30-minute unpaid lunch it is 7.5 paid hours; with an hour’s lunch it is 7.

How do I calculate hours for a night shift?

Enter the times as they are. 10:00 pm to 6:00 am is counted as 8 hours because the end time is taken to be on the following day.
