Finding your effective rates
On a pay stub, divide each tax withheld by your gross pay for the period. If $300 of federal income tax was withheld from $2,500, your effective federal rate is 12%. Effective rates are lower than your top tax bracket because only part of your income is taxed at the top rate.
This is an estimate
Real payroll uses withholding tables, wage caps and allowances that vary by jurisdiction and change every year. This calculator applies flat percentages, so treat the result as a planning figure rather than a statement of what you are owed.
Questions people ask
What percentage of my paycheck goes to taxes?
For many US workers the total is between 15% and 30% of gross pay once federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare (7.65%) and state tax are added together. The “share you keep” result shows your own figure.
Why are payroll taxes applied to gross pay?
In the US, Social Security and Medicare are charged on wages before traditional retirement contributions are taken out, while income tax is charged after. This calculator follows that order.
