How the systems work
US and UK sizes count in barleycorns — thirds of an inch — so each full size is ⅓ inch (8.5 mm) longer and each half size about 4 mm. UK sizes run one below US men’s. US women’s sizes are the same scale shifted up by 1.5: a men’s 7 is a women’s 8.5.
EU sizes count in Paris points of ⅔ cm, measured on the last the shoe is built around rather than on the foot, which is why the formula adds 1.5 cm of allowance. Because the steps are different sizes, conversions never line up perfectly. Mondopoint, used for ski boots, and Japanese sizes are simply the foot length.
Sizes vary by brand
There is no enforced standard, so the same foot can be a 9 in one brand and a 9.5 or 10 in another, and brands publish EU equivalents that differ by up to a full size. Many athletic brands treat UK as US men’s minus 0.5 rather than minus 1. Use this as a starting point and confirm against the manufacturer’s chart, ideally the column for foot length.
Measuring your foot
Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe and measure from the wall to the mark. Measure both feet late in the day, when feet are at their largest, and use the longer one. Width matters as much as length — if shoes feel tight across the ball, look for wide fittings rather than going up a size.
