Coin Calculator

Count a jar of change without stacking it. Enter how many of each US coin you have — pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half dollars and dollar coins — to get the total value, the number of coins, how much it all weighs and how the value splits between coin types.

      Formula

      Total = pennies × $0.01 + nickels × $0.05 + dimes × $0.10 + quarters × $0.25 + half dollars × $0.50 + dollar coins × $1
      Weight = pennies × 2.5 g + nickels × 5 g + dimes × 2.268 g + quarters × 5.67 g + half dollars × 11.34 g + dollar coins × 8.1 g

      How to use it

      1. Sort your coins by type.
      2. Count each pile and enter the numbers.
      3. Read the total value and coin count.
      4. Use the weight to check a count on a kitchen scale.

      Bank rolls

      Banks accept coins in standard paper rolls: 50 pennies ($0.50), 40 nickels ($2), 50 dimes ($5), 40 quarters ($10), 20 half dollars ($10) and 25 dollar coins ($25). Many banks give wrappers free to account holders. Coin-counting kiosks are quicker but often keep a fee of 10% or more unless you take a gift card.

      Counting by weight

      Current US coins have exact weights set by the US Mint: penny 2.5 g, nickel 5 g, dime 2.268 g, quarter 5.67 g, half dollar 11.34 g and dollar coin 8.1 g. Dimes, quarters and half dollars all weigh the same per dollar of value — 22.68 g — so a pound of any mix of them is worth $20.

      To count by weight, weigh a sorted pile in grams and divide by the weight of one coin. Pennies made before 1982 are mostly copper and weigh 3.11 g, so an old jar of pennies will weigh heavier than this calculator predicts.
