Type a word, name or phrase to get its gematria value in the most used English ciphers — ordinal, full reduction, reverse ordinal, reverse reduction, Sumerian (×6) and the Jewish cipher — plus standard values for text written in Hebrew letters. A word-by-word table shows where each total comes from.

What gematria is
Gematria reads letters as numbers. It comes from Hebrew, whose letters have long doubled as numerals: in Jewish tradition חי (chai, “life”) adds up to 18, which is why gifts in multiples of $18 are customary. English ciphers apply the same idea to the Latin alphabet; they are modern conventions rather than an ancient system.
How letters are counted here
Only letters count. Spaces, digits and punctuation are skipped, accented letters count as their plain form (é = e), and Hebrew vowel points are ignored. Final Hebrew letters (ך ם ן ף ץ) take the same value as their regular forms, which is the standard method; some traditions give them 500 to 900 instead.
Sites name their ciphers differently — “simple gematria” usually means English ordinal, while “English gematria” on some sites means ordinal × 6 — so compare the method, not just the name.
