      Formula

      Screen width (16:9) = 0.872 × diagonal
      Distance for a viewing angle θ = (width ÷ 2) ÷ tan(θ ÷ 2)
      40° view ≈ 1.2 × diagonal; 30° view ≈ 1.6 × diagonal
Resolution limit = pixel height ÷ tan(1 arcminute)

      How to use it

      1. Enter the TV’s diagonal size.
      2. Choose its resolution.
      3. Sit between the 40° and 30° distances; nearer for films and games, farther for casual viewing.
      4. Check the resolution limit: beyond it, a higher resolution would make no visible difference.

      Worked examples

      A 65-inch 4K TV: 6.49 ft for a 40° view, 8.81 ft for 30° (1.977 m and 2.685 m)

      Cinema-style distance (40° view)
      6.49 ft
      Mixed-use distance (30° view)
      8.81 ft
Beyond this you cannot see the full resolution
      4.23 ft
      Screen width
      56.65 in

      A 50-inch 1080p TV, in meters

      Cinema-style distance (40° view)
      1.52 m
      Mixed-use distance (30° view)
      2.07 m
Beyond this you cannot see the full resolution
      1.98 m

      Where the angles come from

The two figures follow widely quoted cinema guidelines: a screen filling about 40° of your field of view for an immersive picture, the figure usually attributed to THX, and a minimum of 30°, attributed to SMPTE. Between the two is a comfortable range for most living rooms.

Working backwards to a TV size

Divide your seating distance in inches by 1.2 for the largest size that still feels cinematic, and by 1.6 for the smallest that stays engaging. At 8 feet (96 inches), that is anything from a 60-inch to an 80-inch screen.

      The resolution limit

Someone with 20/20 vision can separate details about one arcminute apart. Sit farther away than the limit shown and neighboring pixels blur together, so extra resolution is wasted. This is a guide to sharpness only; comfort and personal preference matter just as much.

      Questions people ask

How far should I sit from a 65-inch TV?

Between about 6.5 feet (40° view) and 8.8 feet (30° view).

How far should I sit from a 55-inch TV?

Between about 5.5 feet and 7.5 feet.

What size TV do I need for a 10-foot viewing distance?

      Roughly 75 to 100 inches by these guidelines: 120 inches ÷ 1.6 = 75 and 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100. Many people are happy with less.
