      Formula

      Area = length × width
      Pavers = area × (1 + waste %) ÷ (paver length × paver width), rounded up
      Gravel base = area × base depth
      Bedding sand = area × 1 in

      How to use it

      1. Enter the patio’s length and width.
      2. Enter the paver’s length and width in inches.
      3. Set the gravel base depth for your project.
      4. Add waste and a price per paver to get the count and cost.

      Pavers per square foot

      4 × 8 in brick pavers: 4.5 per sq ft. 6 × 6 in: 4. 6 × 9 in: 2.67. 12 × 12 in: 1. 16 × 16 in: 0.56. 24 × 24 in: 0.25.

      Concrete pavers have small spacer lugs and are laid tight, so no joint allowance is needed for an estimate.

      Base and bedding

      A typical patio or walkway sits on 4 in of compacted crushed gravel with a 1 in layer of coarse sand screeded on top. Driveways need 6–8 in of base or more, and cold or clay-soil sites need extra depth. The base should extend several inches past the paver edge, so add that to your dimensions when ordering gravel.

      Compaction reduces loose gravel by roughly 15–20%, so order more than the compacted volume shown here.

      Questions people ask

      How many pavers do I need for a 10×12 patio?

      A 10 × 12 ft patio is 120 sq ft. In 4 × 8 in pavers that is 540, or 594 with 10% for cuts and breakage.

      How many 12×12 pavers do I need for 100 square feet?

      100 pavers exactly, so buy 105–110 to allow for cuts.

      How much paver base do I need?

      For a 4 in base, about 1.23 cubic yards of gravel per 100 sq ft, plus about 0.31 cubic yards of sand for the 1 in bedding layer.
