Reading the three formats
American odds are built around $100. A plus number is the profit on a $100 bet, so +150 wins $150. A minus number is the stake needed to win $100, so −110 means betting $110 to win $100.
Decimal odds, used in Europe, Canada and Australia, are the total return for each 1 staked, stake included: 2.50 returns $250 on $100. Fractional odds, traditional in the UK and Ireland, are profit over stake: 5/2 wins 5 for every 2 staked.
The bookmaker’s margin
Implied probability is the win rate you need to break even at those odds, not the true chance of winning. Add up the implied probabilities of every outcome in a market and the total is usually more than 100%; the excess is the bookmaker’s margin, often called the vig or overround. With −110 on both sides of a game, each side implies 52.38%, a total of 104.76%.
So a bettor laying −110 has to win more than 52.38% of bets just to break even. Odds are a price, not a prediction, and because of the margin the expected result over many bets is a loss.
Questions people ask
How much do I win on a $100 bet at +150?
$150 profit, so $250 back in total including your stake.
What does −110 mean?
You stake $110 to win $100 profit, getting $210 back if it wins. As decimal odds that is 1.909, and the implied probability is 52.38%.
What is 5/2 in decimal and American odds?
Decimal 3.50 and American +250. A stake of 10 returns 35: 25 profit plus the 10 back.
How do I convert odds to a probability?
Divide 1 by the decimal odds: 2.50 is 1 ÷ 2.5 = 0.40, or 40%. From American odds, +150 is 100 ÷ (150 + 100) = 40%, and −200 is 200 ÷ (200 + 100) = 66.67%.
