Hello, world: welcome to the KeenCalculator blog

By The KeenCalculator team ·

Hello, world. This is the first post on the KeenCalculator blog, so let’s start with who we are and why the site exists.

Why another calculator site?

Most of us open a calculator site with one question in mind: how much overtime did I earn, what will this mortgage cost, how many bags of concrete do I need. Too often the answer is buried under pop-ups, slow ads and a page that jumps around while it loads.

KeenCalculator is our attempt at the opposite. Every page is a static file that opens instantly, the answer updates as you type, and nothing moves under your finger. There are no accounts, no ads and no web fonts. Your inputs never leave your device.

What you can do here

There are now more than 430 calculators, grouped into 14 categories. A few that people use every day:

If you don’t see what you need, the A–Z list has every calculator on one page, and the search box at the top finds one in a couple of keystrokes.

It remembers, so you don’t have to

Every calculator keeps your last inputs. You can save a setup under a name, such as your usual hourly rate, and load it again in one click. Results go into your history, where you can review or export them. All of this is stored in your browser, which is why it works without an account. The privacy page explains exactly what is kept and where.

In your language, and on your phone

The site is available in 16 languages, and numbers follow local conventions, such as decimal commas in German or Italian. There is also Keen Calculator for iPhone and Mac, which runs the same engine offline.

What this blog will cover

We’ll use this space for three things:

  1. What’s new. Larger releases get a short write-up here; every change is listed in the changelog.
  2. How the calculators work. The formulas behind them, the assumptions they make, and where the numbers come from.
  3. Practical guides. Worked examples for questions people search for, such as how overtime is calculated or how much a raise really adds to your pay.

Accuracy matters to us. We are bringing in licensed professionals to review our health and finance calculators, and we’ll introduce them here when they join.

Who is behind it

KeenCalculator is made and run by AREALME. The about page tells the full story, including how the calculators are built and tested. And if you need to time something rather than calculate it, our sister site KeenTimer is built the same way.

Thanks for reading, and happy calculating.
