      Formula

Driving time = distance ÷ average speed
Total trip time = driving time + stops
Arrival time = departure time + total trip time

      How to use it

      1. Enter the distance in miles or kilometers.
      2. Enter a realistic average speed for the whole route.
      3. Add the minutes you expect to spend on fuel, food and rest stops.
      4. Enter when you plan to leave to see your arrival time.

      Choosing an average speed

Your average is always lower than your cruising speed. On an open interstate with a 70 mph limit, 62–65 mph is a realistic moving average once you allow for traffic, ramps and slower stretches. Mixed highway and town driving typically averages 40–50 mph, and city driving 20–30 mph.

Driving faster saves less time than it feels like. Over 300 miles, 75 mph instead of 65 mph saves about 37 minutes, and one extra stop can use up most of that.

      Planning stops

A common guideline is a break of at least 15 minutes every two hours of driving. Allow 10–15 minutes for a fuel stop and 30–45 for a meal. The arrival time is in the time zone you set off from, so adjust by hand if you cross into another zone.

      Questions people ask

How long does it take to drive 300 miles?

5 hours at an average of 60 mph, 4 hours 37 minutes at 65 mph, or 4 hours 17 minutes at 70 mph, before stops.

How long does it take to drive 100 miles?

1 hour 40 minutes at 60 mph, or 2 hours at 50 mph.

How do I calculate travel time?

Divide the distance by your average speed. 450 km at 100 km/h is 4.5 hours, or 4 hours 30 minutes.
