      Formula

      Each year: balance = (balance + contribution) × (1 + return)
Taxable account: the same, but the return is reduced by your tax rate on it: × (1 + return × (1 − tax rate))
Maximum contribution (2026 limit): $7,500, or $8,600 in years you are 50 or older
Roth advantage = Roth balance − taxable account balance

      How to use it

      1. Enter your current age, the age you plan to retire and your Roth balance today.
      2. Choose the 2026 maximum or enter your own yearly amount.
      3. Set the expected return, and a tax rate for the taxable-account comparison.
      4. Read the balance at retirement; the table shows it at every age.

      US Roth IRA rules

For 2026 the IRS limit is $7,500 a year, plus a $1,100 catch-up from age 50 ($8,600). The limit is shared across all your IRAs, traditional and Roth, and you cannot contribute more than your taxable compensation for the year. Contributions for a year can be made until that year’s tax-filing deadline.

Direct Roth contributions phase out above income limits that the IRS sets each year; above them, people often use a “backdoor” Roth conversion. You can withdraw your contributions at any time without tax or penalty; earnings come out tax-free once you are 59½ and the account is at least five years old. Roth IRAs have no required minimum distributions for the original owner.

      How the projection works

Contributions are made at the start of each year and returns compound yearly. The maximum option holds the limit at 2026 levels; the IRS raises limits with inflation over time, so you may be able to save more later. The taxable comparison treats the tax as a steady drag on each year’s return, which is a simplification. Returns are not guaranteed — this is an estimate, not financial advice.
