Midpoint Calculator

The midpoint is the point exactly halfway between two others. Enter the coordinates of both endpoints to get the midpoint, the length of the segment and the distance from each end to the middle.

      Formula

      Midpoint = ((x₁ + x₂) ÷ 2, (y₁ + y₂) ÷ 2)
      Segment length = √((x₂ − x₁)² + (y₂ − y₁)²)

      How to use it

      1. Enter the first endpoint.
      2. Enter the second endpoint.
      3. Read the midpoint: its x is the average of the two x-values and its y is the average of the two y-values.

      Just two averages

      Finding a midpoint is nothing more than averaging the x-coordinates and averaging the y-coordinates separately. Negative numbers need care: the midpoint of −4 and 6 is (−4 + 6) ÷ 2 = 1, not 5.

      Questions people ask

      What is the midpoint of (1, 2) and (3, 8)?

      ((1 + 3) ÷ 2, (2 + 8) ÷ 2) = (2, 5).

      What is the midpoint of (−4, 7) and (6, −2)?

      (1, 2.5).

      How do I find an endpoint if I know the midpoint?

      Double the midpoint and subtract the known endpoint. The endpoint calculator does this for you.
