Karats, stamps and weights
Karat is parts of gold out of 24: 24K is pure (sold as 99.9%), 22K is 91.7%, 18K is 75% (stamped 750), 14K is 58.3% (often stamped 585), 10K is 41.7% (417) and 9K is 37.5% (375). In the US, 10K is the lowest fineness that can be sold as karat gold. Stamps such as GF, GP, HGE or RGP mean gold-filled or plated, which contains very little gold.
Gold is priced by the troy ounce of 31.103 g, about 9.7% heavier than the 28.35 g ounce on a kitchen scale. Jewelers often weigh in pennyweights: 1 dwt is 1.555 g and 20 dwt make one troy ounce.
What a buyer will actually pay
Melt value is the gold’s worth at spot. Buyers deduct refining costs and their margin, and offers vary widely, so get more than one quote and ask what percentage of melt value they pay. Coins and well-made jewelry can sell for more than melt value; stones, clasps and solder add weight but no gold, so weigh them separately or subtract them. In the US, gold is taxed as a collectible, with long-term gains taxed at up to 28%. This is an estimate, not financial advice.
